Dallas Auction Gallery - Mad Day Out with the Beatles - Photography by Tom Murray
What began as an ordinary day for 25-year-old Tom Murray in July of 1968 quickly transformed into something extraordinary with a single phone call.
A photographer friend invited Murray, an aspiring photographer, to join him on a photoshoot. Unaware of what lay ahead, Murray agreed. When they arrived at the location, Murray discovered that the subjects of the shoot were none other than The Beatles. You can imagine his astonishment as he readied his camera and found Paul, John, George, and Ringo on the other side of the lens.
That unforgettable day, later dubbed the "Mad Day Out in London," revealed a playful, candid side of The Beatles never before captured. Murray shot two rolls of film, then stored them away, where they remained unseen for 30 years until rediscovered in 2007.
The photos from that session became some of the last professionally shot images of The Beatles before their breakup. Remarkably, the day after the shoot, the band recorded “Hey Jude,” a song still beloved by fans today.
Murray went on to build an illustrious career, becoming a Royal photographer in London and working with the Sunday Times. Over the years, he’s photographed legends like Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and more.
