Good Life New England - A Tale of Two Antique Homes
A renovation of any kind always presents challenges. Renovation of an antique home presents its own special set of challenges. Thankfully, the team at Good Life New England loves nothing more than a design challenge.
Antique Renovation #1
Along the south coast of Massachusetts sits the quaint town of Cohasset. With its rocky shoreline, stunning views, and walkability, it’s something straight out of a coffee table book. Torn from the pages of that book is a much-admired antique stunner that recently underwent a major kitchen and master bath transformation when the new owners purchased the home in 2018. For the owners of this 280+ year old home, this renovation was very personal. The homeowner grew up in a beautiful antique home in MD, so this style home was already near and dear to her heart. After losing both of her parents recently, this project became even more meaningful.
Good Life New England was honored to collaborate with the new homeowners on this extensive renovation. While the owners wanted to preserve the antique charm, they longed for a cleaner aesthetic with more storage and functionality. The kitchen was completely redesigned which involved: removing a wall, moving doors and windows, leveling up the uneven flooring, and adding a cozy fireplace. Additional seating was captured at the large center island and a wet bar was added. The result was a modern version of the quintessential New England kitchen…. bright, light, and comfy. The master bathroom renovation presented its share of plumbing challenges (as antique homes often do), but the final outcome was a cheerful and airy luxury bathroom with soaking tub and large glass shower.
Antique Renovation #2
North of Cohasset, on the outskirts of Boston, is the vibrant town of Milton. This affluent and diverse suburb is popular with young professionals. In a spectacular antique colonial, on a beautiful tree-lined street in the heart of Milton lives a vibrant, young family of five longing to create a space that could better accommodate their busy household. Built in 1895, this enchanting property was ready to be modernized, in a tasteful manner, while incorporating design elements that maintained the home’s charm. The homeowners wanted a larger seating island for their family, a separate entertaining bar for large gatherings, and large-capacity, commercial grade appliances.
For Good Life New England, the goal was to incorporate a timeless cabinetry design that respected the age and style of this very traditional home. Clean lines with soothing colors and wood accents were the perfect combination. This broad reaching renovation expanded past the kitchen and into the pantry, mudroom, master bath, and dressing area.
