Not every one of us is born to be wild. Some need a bit of motivation to tap into that daredevil streak. It’s probably why we invest in supercars.

Did you know the fastest road-legal supercar can clock up to 277.87mph? How’s that for wack? Whether you own a 2017 Koenigsegg Agera RS or an Audi R8, the question is: can you control that type of power and speed?

Unless you’re a certified F1 driver or have experience driving fast cars, our guess is “no.” Our advice? Do an online search for “driver training near me” and take a defensive driving course before getting behind the wheel of your new supercar.

Below, we’ll explain why you should master defensive driving before hitting the gas.

Before You Get Started

When it comes to supercars, safety isn't up for debate, and your tires play a huge role in that.

These cars usually don’t rack up tons of miles as daily drivers do, and let’s be honest: many owners focus more on looks than essentials like tire health.

So, start by checking the tread, but don’t just glance at the outer edges. Supercars tend to wear tires unevenly, especially on the inside, so take a closer look.

And don’t be fooled by how tires look. Even if they seem fine, older tires can lose their structural strength. As a general rule, it’s best to avoid driving on tires more than ten years old.

Choose Your Fighter

American Driving Academy Inc. recommends choosing a quality driver’s ed program; one that includes behind-the-wheel training.

Having an experienced instructor makes a big difference. They can give you personalized tips and help you feel more confident handling all kinds of driving situations.

Ensure the instructor is certified by a reputable organization, specifically if the defensive driving course serves a specific purpose, like lowering insurance premiums.

Consider other factors such as course structure, flexibility, and safety measures. Trust your instincts and pick someone you feel safe with and who communicates openly.

Practice driving in a safe, controlled environment. By the end of the program, you should feel comfortable with your new set of driving skills.

A Good Fit?

Are you familiar with the car’s fit and features? It may sound logical but these factors apply to supercars, given their unique design and advanced technology.

An incorrect driving position can cause pins and needles, cramps, and stiffness.

For a comfortable driving experience, adjust your seat high enough for clear road visibility while maintaining head clearance. Your hips should be level with or higher than your knees.

If the steering wheel is adjustable, ensure it's easy to reach and doesn't block your view of dashboard displays.

Fasten your seatbelt securely, with the lap belt over your pelvis and the diagonal strap across your shoulder, and not your neck.

Need for Speed

It can be hard to show some restraint but go easy in the first round. Yes, supercars are built for performance. However, you shouldn't push them to their limits when familiarizing yourself with the drive and control.

Avoid flooring the gas pedal when driving a supercar for the first time. Instead, gradually build speed to get a feel for its handling and power.

Supercars accelerate quickly, but you shouldn’t rely solely on traction control systems. Ease into their performance gradually.

In single-clutch automated gearboxes, smooth driving comes from modulating throttle input. Lift off slightly at low speeds for smoother shifts, and keep your foot down at higher speeds for quicker, crisper changes.

Quick Defensive Driving Tips

Maryland Highway Safety Office advises the “3-second rule” as a baseline, adjusting for speed and weather, to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Regularly check your mirrors and scan the road ahead. Watch for hazards like pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, and stay aware of traffic flow and speed.

Follow speed limits and adjust your speed for road, traffic, and weather conditions. Avoid excessive speed, which reduces reaction time and raises accident risk.

Lastly, driving a supercar doesn’t permit you to hog the lane. Use turn signals to show your intentions. Stay predictable and avoid sudden lane changes or braking.

Safety First

Safety should always be on your mind whether driving a supercar or a family SUV.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and be mindful of your passengers. Not everyone likes the feeling of G-forces lifting them from their seat.

Ease into your role as the driver. Enlist the services of a defensive driving instructor at a driving school and listen to their instructions.

Check your tires and tread and familiarize yourself with the car’s fit and features. Don’t compromise comfort just for the sake of looking cool behind the wheel. Stay within the speed limit, check your mirrors, and follow the “3-second rule.”

Good luck and don’t forget your seatbelt!
